Using Discovery

eightolives Dicovery screen shot Discovery is a tool that searches a local network for computers running eightolives' Microservers. Discovered servers are listed with links to the device's start page. Tools like RaspberryMonitor and Schematic Mobile can be invoked from that start page.

The tool starts when you load the page. It tries to connect with 256 addresses on the specified local network in search of the servers that have the start page (eo.htm is the default start page). A full scan of all 256 addresses can take approximately 6 minutes. You do not have to complete the full scan if your device(s) are discovered early. Click the "Stop" menu option to terminate the scan.

Servers that are discovered are stored in your browser's cache memory and are tried first on subsequent runs to reduce discovery time.

Two menu options, Setup and Details, can be clicked to display or hide those options.

Setup options let you specify the base IP address of the local network and the port to be used. The default settings are for the typical local network (192.168.1.xxx) and for the default non-secure Microserver port, 8080. You can also specify the filename used in the search (the default for eightolives tools is eo.htm). If you check the "Report Details" checkbox, all computers found during the search will be listed. The Stop and Search buttons let you terminate and restart a search. The Clear Cache button clears the discovered server history.

The Details option shows additional displays of the search. This is usually only of value during debug.

The displayed links for discovered servers are actually modified to specify the secure Microserver default port of 8081 to allow the subsequently selected tool to be invoked using secure https. The certificate used by Microservers is self-signed which will be flagged as unverifiable by your browser on first use. You will need to tell your browser to accept the certificate. Click for more information on certificates.
